SPRING 2022 CLASSES

IMPRESSIONISTIC PORTRAIT PAINTING

(Through structural and observational drawing techniques, we will create a painterly sketch directly on the canvas and proceed with a vibrant underpainting to establish strong warm & cool color relationships. We will then develop the painting in an impressionistic style using a contemporary palette.)

Dates:

3/25, 4/1 & 4/8

Times:

10 am to 1 pm

Cost:

$175

Open Medium Plein Air at Tyler Park

(This workshop will focus on the techniques of rendering a landscape from nature using the medium of your choice such as oils, pastels, watercolor, colored pencils, etc. Students will be required to bring their own easels and necessary supplies. We will meet at a predetermined, specific location at Tyler Park where we will draw or paint directly from life. I will discuss and demonstrate how to set up a composition, select the appropriate colors, and create the illusion of light and atmosphere as well as render specific textures to add realism to the landscape.)

Dates:

4/12 & 4/19

Times:

10 am to 2 pm

Cost:

$150

Pet Portraits in Pastel

(This class will focus on rendering pets using pastels. Through the process of layering and blending, we will create a variety of textures such as fur. We will also focus on capturing the unique expression and personality within the eyes of our furry friends.)

Dates:

4/21, 4/28, 5/5 & 5/12

Times:

10 am to 12 pm

Cost:

$150

Still Life w/ Ink, Egg Tempera & Pastels

(In this class we will focus on a simple still life using a combination of ink washes, egg tempera and pastels. Egg tempera is a water soluble medium which pre-dates oil paint and is known for rendering brilliant color and fine detail. Through a specific technique of layering the tempera over ink washes and then adding pastels as a final layer, we will capture luminous, jewel-like colors. For this class we will be using pre-mixed Sennelier egg tempera paints sold in small tubes.)

Dates:

4/26, 5/3, 5/10 & 5/24

Times:

10 am to 1 pm

Cost:

$225

Flemish Style Portrait Painting

(In this class we will construct a portrait painting based on the Flemish technique. This method involves a careful linear drawing which will be transferred onto the canvas or panel using an oil transfer. We will then create a Verdaccio under layer in green tones and proceed with glazing and scumbling to build up the colors.)

Dates:

5/6, 5/13, 5/27 & 6/3

Times:

10 am to 1 pm

$225

STUDENT TESTAMONIALS

“David Rivera is quite simply put, one of the best instructors I have ever had the pleasure of studying with. Over the time I spent working with him, I watched as my skill set and technique developed from amateur to truly refined. David takes the time to really teach how to construct a drawing or painting with clear and concise direction. I highly recommend taking lessons with him if you want to master your ability in fine art. Apart from his phenomenal teaching, David is also incredibly knowledgeable concerning the history behind fine art. Not only will one gain valuable tools to approach art, but one will also gain insight into how fine art developed into what it is today. David Rivera is a true professional and always approaches fine art with a confident attitude in whatever mode he may be working in.”

-L. Lorenzo

“These classes teach you necessary and important fundamentals on a very individual basis in small group or private classes. Excellent, clear explanations; very patient and kind, engaging teacher. I’ve had my share of group classes elsewhere that didn’t teach me much of anything, which is frustrating… David Rivera solved that problem with his classical training and extensive teaching background. I have taken classes here for about 1.5 – 2 years now and I finally found the technical and artistic information I’ve been searching for. Classes are in person or online with Zoom, with recordings sent to you after each class, which is enormously helpful. If you are serious about your art as a long-time artist or if you’ve been wondering about trying “this art thing” … I highly recommend this studio. You will find what you are looking for!”
